ABOUT THE JOB
Backend Engineer (Security/SOC 2)

At The Graphite Lab, we help the trades scale smarter through AI and automation. As a Backend Engineer focused on Security & SOC 2, you’ll play a critical role in strengthening the foundation of our platform as we grow. You’ll lead the hands-on execution of our SOC 2 compliance efforts while contributing to backend development that supports a secure, scalable product.
This role starts with a strong focus on SOC 2 implementation and audit readiness. As we complete our compliance milestones, the role naturally evolves into a broader backend engineering position with ongoing security ownership.
What you'll be doing:
Drive SOC 2 Execution: Serve as the primary driver for SOC 2 tasks using Vanta, collaborating with your manager to track requirements, close gaps, and prepare for audit readiness.
Secure Our Infrastructure: Implement SOC 2-aligned security best practices across our platform, with a focus on AWS infrastructure and cloud security fundamentals.
Document & Operationalize: Write and maintain clear, practical security policies, procedures, and supporting documentation.
Collaborate with Engineering: Work closely with our backend engineer to implement security-related improvements and remediate gaps.
Build Backend Systems: Contribute to backend features, APIs, and reliability improvements; especially work related to authentication, access control, and data handling.
Skills & Qualifications
Who you are:
A builder who enjoys creating structure in a fast-growing startup.
Curious, proactive, and self-motivated with a bias for action.
Comfortable in a remote, collaborative environment.
Able to balance hands-on engineering with documentation and process.
What you bring:
3+ years of experience as a backend, platform, or infrastructure engineer.
Strong working knowledge of AWS and cloud security best practices.
Experience with (or strong interest in) SOC 2, security frameworks, or compliance workflows.
Ability to write clear, organized documentation and follow through on details.
