Next Expert

When a new technician joins, Next Expert pairs them with a senior technician and sets up their shadow visits. On each visit, both techs work through the same skill checklist for the role, checking off the competencies as the new tech shows them. As the checked-off skills and the paired-hours add up, the new technician moves through the program on their own. They go from watching, to working under supervision, to ready for solo. The Training Coordinator sees where every new hire stands on one screen and signs off on the final certification before anyone heads out alone. When the field service system is connected, Next Expert reads the paired shifts from the schedule. It also pulls the paired-hours from timesheets and writes the certification back to the technician's record.

The promise

Each new hire's progress sits on one screen, with the paired-hours counted and the next stage clear. Each shadow visit logs itself against the checklist, and the new technician moves toward solo on a defined path. The coordinator does not have to rebuild a tracking spreadsheet or chase down who rode with whom. The time that used to go to scheduling pairs and tallying hours goes back to coaching the techs who need it.

How it works

The path from input to value.

  1. 01

    Add the new technician

When a new technician joins, Next Expert pairs them with a senior technician and lays out the program stages. When the field service system is connected, it reads the paired shifts from the dispatch schedule so the structure builds on its own.

  2. 02

    Work the shared checklist

On each shadow visit, the new tech and the senior tech work the same per-visit skill checklist for the role, checking off competencies as the new tech shows them.

  3. 03

    Advance through the stages

As completed skills and paired-hours add up, the new technician moves automatically from observing, to supervised work, to solo-ready.

  4. 04

    Review and certify

The coordinator sees every new hire's progress, paired-hours, and stage on one screen and clears the final certification before the tech goes solo. When connected, the certification is written back to the technician's record.

The day before. The day after.

Same moments. Lived differently.

  • 7:00 AM

    Before

Coffee and the onboarding spreadsheet. The coordinator counts up two new hires' paired-hours and tries to remember which senior techs they rode with. One sign-off is still missing from last week, so they flag it.

    After

The coordinator opens Next Expert to both new hires' progress on one screen, paired-hours counted, completed skills checked, and each one's current stage already updated.

  • 8:30 AM

    Before

The coordinator works the dispatch board to set up this week's shadow pairings, checking who is free and whether the day's jobs fit each new tech's stage.

    After

The shadow pairings for the week are already set in the program, so the coordinator confirms them and spends the time on the brazing session one new tech asked for.

  • 4:30 PM

    Before

End of day, the coordinator updates the checklist from notes and texts, and still can not say for sure whether the week-three hire has cleared enough to move up.

    After

The week-three hire crossed the supervised-work threshold during the day and moved up on their own. The coordinator sees they are one gate from solo and schedules the certification.

What it doesn’t do

The edges we drew on purpose.

A product that tries to do everything ends up doing nothing well. Here’s what we left out, and why we don’t feel bad about it.

  • ×Building or changing the dispatch schedule, or assigning the jobs the paired visits ride on
  • ×Running payroll or approving timesheets
  • ×Delivering classroom courses or training content
  • ×Tracking license or certification expirations after the technician is certified
