Skill Map

Skill Map gives every apprentice their own personal webpage to track their progress in the field. They can log equipment they've worked on, add notes from jobs, and build a running record of their hands-on experience. The Field Supervisor can view any apprentice's Skill Map at any time to see where they stand and what they've been exposed to.

The promise

Apprentices stop leaving the field with nothing to show for what they learned. Every piece of equipment they touched and every note they took lives in one place. Their Field Supervisor gets visibility without having to ask for updates.

How it works

The path from input to value.

  1. 01

Every apprentice gets their own Skill Map

When an apprentice is set up on the platform, their personal Skill Map page is created automatically. It's theirs to build out as they move through jobs and gain experience in the field.

  2. 02

Apprentices log equipment they've worked on

From their Skill Map, apprentices can log equipment they've worked on — either by linking it to a specific job or adding it as a standalone entry. Each log captures the equipment type, what was done, and when.

  3. 03

Apprentices add notes from the field

Apprentices can add free-form notes at any time — observations from a job, something a tech showed them, a technique they want to remember. Notes are timestamped and stay on their Skill Map permanently.

  4. 04

The Field Supervisor can view any Skill Map

The Field Supervisor has read access to every apprentice's Skill Map. They can see logged equipment, notes, and how the record has grown over time — without asking the apprentice to recap what they've been doing.

The day before. The day after.

Same moments. Lived differently.

  • 8:00 AM

    Before

Apprentice finishes a job where they worked on a new equipment type for the first time. There's nowhere to log it. The experience lives in their head.

    After

Apprentice finishes a job and logs the equipment they worked on directly from their Skill Map. Tied to the job, timestamped, permanently on their record.

  • 10:30 AM

    Before

Field Supervisor tries to remember which apprentices have worked on heat pumps. Goes on memory. Not confident in the answer.

    After

Field Supervisor opens the apprentice's Skill Map. Every piece of equipment logged, every note added. Heat pump experience is right there.

  • 1:00 PM

    Before

Apprentice wants to write down something a tech showed them on the last job. Texts it to themselves. It gets buried in their messages.

    After

Apprentice adds a note from the morning job while it's still fresh. Technique, observation, question they want to follow up on. It's on their Skill Map.

  • 4:00 PM

    Before

Field Supervisor sits down for a check-in with an apprentice. Has no record of what they've actually done in the field. Conversation starts from scratch.

    After

Check-in with the apprentice is grounded in their actual logged experience. Field Supervisor can see exactly what they've been exposed to and where the gaps still are.

What it doesn’t do

The edges we drew on purpose.

A product that tries to do everything ends up doing nothing well. Here’s what we left out, and why we don’t feel bad about it.

  • ×Does not automatically pull equipment or job data onto the Skill Map — apprentices log it themselves.
  • ×Does not replace formal apprenticeship records or certification tracking.
  • ×Does not allow the Field Supervisor to add or edit entries on the apprentice's behalf.
  • ×Does not generate progress reports or advancement recommendations automatically.
